This is the letter that started it all...

CULTURAL EXCHANGE THROUGH PIECEWORK
February 2000

Hi there everybody! We all have a common bond in that we are acquainted with Diane de Fremery. I think I can brag that I have known her the longest and so have been involved in her interesting and sometimes off-beat ideas, plans and schemes over the years. She has come up with a very interesting project in which we hope you will all participate. The idea is that each of us will design a patchwork square and replicate it 6 times in all. We then keep one of our own squares and send on the other 5. As there are six "chosen people" each person will end up with 6 different squares to assemble any way you like. We hope everyone will then photograph her finished work of art. Well, what do you think? If you like the idea will you set to work and try to have your 6 squares finished by May 1st, 2000. Here is a summary of the project:

  • The design of each square should be 6" with a margin of 1" around to allow for stitching onto the final panel.
  • Material to be cotton.
  • Theme to be flowers.
  • The colours (or colors for those living in USA), design and detail are of your own choice.

The following have been invited to share in this interesting and innovative international, cross-cultural adventure:

Diane deFremery dianedefermery@hotmail.com USA
Michele Russell michelerussell@juno.com Ireland (USA transplant)
Lisa Jizrawi ljizrawi@hotmail.com USA (Diane's daughter)
Kathy Miller   USA (Michele's sister)
Margaret Corr   Ireland (genuine article)

Will you contact either Diane or myself if you have any more questions. If you feel you don't want to be involved that is OK, we will catch you another time as we have loads more ideas (and you probably have some yourselves). But we need 6 people so would appreciate your letting us know soon if you don't want to participate so that we can go to our reserve list.

I hope this newsletter finds all of you well. There has been terrible flu this side of the Atlantic.

Michele
